Great! Child of Farmer Wins Gold in Electronics Competition in Abu Dhabi

Semarang – A Semarang State Polytechnic (Polines) student named A Nur Fatkhul Cholbi won the international electronics competition in Abu Dhabi. His efforts led Cholbi to win a gold medal at the 2018 World Skill Asia event in Abu Dhabi.

The 1st semester Electrical Engineering student won the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning competition which was held from 27 to 29 November 2018. He beat 9 other participants from various countries. "The strongest opponents are Malaysia, the Philippines, the UAE, and India," said Cholbi when met at his campus some time ago.

The competition that was followed was about knowledge of cooling engine electronics. The participants were given a module to be completed into a cooling device where the heat from the engine can also be used. "So the tool makes ice like the ice skating rink, but the heat can also be used for energy," said Cholbi.

With limited time, it turns out that only 3 people can complete it. However, Cholbi's score was the same as the participant from Malaysia, so with the jury's decision, both of them got gold medals. "The win is in terms of following the rules, paying attention to work performance and safety and cleanliness. And the results are appropriate, the system is normal,” explained the student from Kendal Regency, Central Java.

The seventh son of seven brothers, a simple farmer couple, Kambali and Tunut, has struggled since attending SMK N 2 Kendal, majoring in refrigeration and air conditioning engineering. His interest in that field led him to become a champion in the competition he participated in. "When SMK wins 1 at the provincial level, then at the national level 1 wins. Entering Polines, you get a call for the Southeast Asian level in Bangkok, and you get bronze," he said.

On his way to the competition, he had to give up his bidik misi scholarship due to a 9-month leave for training to advance to the Asian level in Abu Dhabi. His sacrifice paid off by getting a gold medal. “Fathers and mothers are farm laborers, cultivators of people's land. I went to college to take aim at the mission, but dropped out because I had to take 9 months off,” he said.

Not without obstacles when he went abroad to take part in the competition, because the costs were borne by himself for the plane ticket. As a result, he used the money for the previous competition to go, plus assistance from several parties.

"I really like this field. I want to be an expert, and I like to innovate,” he said.

Meanwhile the Director of Polines, Ir. Supriyadi said that his party gave appreciation to outstanding students. What can be done is to provide scholarships to Cholbi. "Later, we will try to provide scholarships, but not as big as Bidik Misi," said Supriyadi.
