Polines Team Provides Training to Increase Onion Cracker Production in Semarang Regency

SEMARANG – Onion crackers are one of Indonesia's typical foods that are widely loved by the public to accompany main meals. Onion crackers are one of the leading products of Rowobajul Village, Ambarawa District, Semarang Regency.

Onion crackers are made from wheat flour or tapioca flour, and garlic as the main ingredient to give it a distinctive taste.
The demand for onion cracker products continues to increase because of its delicious and savory taste. However, there are obstacles in increasing production capacity because the entire production process is done manually, especially in slicing the onion cracker dough. So that the sale of onion cracker products has not been maximized.

Politeknik Negeri Semarang (Polines) as a vocational college has an important role in applying science and technology especially to the community. Appropriate Technology (TTG) is applied to help overcome problems in the community.

Seeing the condition of the onion cracker craftsmen in Rowobajul Village, Ambarawa District, Semarang Regency, Polines was moved to help the craftsmen by providing training on the use of TTG in their production. Also providing assistance with TTG tools made by the Polines campus for onion cracker craftsmen or home businesses.

The training in the context of community service funded by the Directorate of Academic Higher Vocational Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology for the 2023 Fiscal Year was greatly felt by Mrs. Trimah, one of the owners of a small and medium enterprise (UMKM) producing onion crackers.

The UKM is very grateful to the Polines team consisting of Dr. Eko Saputra ST MT as the Team Leader (Lecturer of the Department of Mechanical Engineering) with members Carli ST MT, Hartono ST MT and Ali Sai'in SPd MT assisted by 4 students as a form of implementing student competency by carrying out the design and construction process of a cracker dough slicing machine.

To the press at the local campus, Dr. Eko conveyed that the assistance and training focused on overcoming partner problems, especially in the field of onion cracker production. The entire series of activities were carried out from June to November 2024. In the field of production, the team provided assistance with Appropriate Technology (TTG) and training on the use of the onion cracker dough slicing machine. This machine is equipped with a 2Hp electric motor. The use of the machine greatly helps production and can increase the productivity of the onion cracker business. (Sgi)
