The open doctoral exam took place in the Main Meeting Room, Second Floor, Machinery Building, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, recently.

Attended, among others, Ir. Endro Wasito, M. Kom. Acting as the promoter is Prof.Dr.Ir. Pratikto, MMT. with Co-promoter Prof.Ir. Sudjito Soeparman, Ph.D. and Ir. Purnomo Budi Santoso, M.SC., Ph.D.

Ampala Khoryanton, a lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Polines, through his dissertation entitled "Strategies for Achieving Product Quality Standards for Small and Medium Ship Component Industries" conveyed that the development of the ship industry in Indonesia is very slow when compared to other countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, and Vietnam. . "The low level of domestic ship components causes the national ship industry to be uncompetitive," he said. A total of 70 – 80 % ship components must be imported from abroad.

The ship component Small and Medium Industry (IKM) cluster in Tegal Regency has the potential to support the national shipping industry. The ability to produce ship components with standardized quality is an absolute requirement that must be fulfilled by ship component manufacturers in order to supply their products to the national ship industry.

Some of the problems of ship component IKM in Tegal Regency which are the basis for the study in this research are Value Chain, the low collective cooperation between business actors in the Ship Component IKM cluster. Second, the contribution of technology (Technoware, Humanware, Infoware, and Orgaware) is still low. And thirdly, there is no supporting institution/business model that functions specifically to provide guidance, assistance, supply development, assisting the certification process, and marketing certified products.

The formulation of the problem that will be solved in this research is how the strategy for achieving product quality standards for small and medium ship component industries is based on value chain development, increasing technology contributions and developing business models. The purpose of this research is to determine a strategy for achieving product quality standards in ship component SMEs through the development of its value chain, strengthening the contribution of technology, and developing its business model.

This research, according to Ampala, uses three methods simultaneously, namely the value chain method (value chain), technometric method and canvas business model method. "Method value chain used to identify customer value which can be increased or decreased production costs,” he explained. Technometric methods to assess and analyze technology variables related to the production process in order to support the achievement of product quality standards. And the canvas business model functions to produce an institutional model that is oriented towards quality standard products as business management for ship component SMEs including coaching activities or training activities supply development, marketing and sales of products.

This research resulted in a strategy for achieving product quality standards for ship component SMEs through the development of: appropriate technology, market access, business management, government policies, capital networks, supply of raw materials, infrastructure, technology development priorities.

The dissertation has been defended before a team of examiners consisting of Dr. eng. Eko Siswanto, ST., MT, Dr. Slamet Wahyudi, ST., MT and Prof. Dr. Ir Onny Suryono Sutresman, MT as the external examiner from Unhas.

Ampala Khoryanton, who took his undergraduate studies from the Ten November Institute of Technology (ITS Surabaya) and the Masters degree from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) was declared graduated with a 3.59 GPA with a very satisfactory predicate.
