The Industrial Era 4.0 has taken place in the Indonesian industrial world, are we ready?

The Industrial Era 4.0 which is marked by the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Big Data, Internet of Things (IoT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been taking place in the last few years in the Indonesian industrial world. The oil, transportation, and hotel industries are some examples of industrial sectors that have implemented the latest technology that marked the ongoing Industrial 4.0 era.

This is a summary of the three speakers of the National Workshop on Strengthening Synergy of Industry and Polytechnics throughout Indonesia in facing the Opportunities and Challenges of the Industrial Era 4.0 organized by the Semarang State Polytechnic Alumni Association at the Hotel Dafam Teraskota Jakarta October 18 2018. The three are Deputy Director for Academic Affairs at the Energy and Mineral Polytechnic. Akamigas Rachman Setiawan ST MSc PhD, Vice President of the National Executive Council of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions Wawan Erfianto SE, and Director of the Manpower Polytechnic Retna Pratiwi SH, M.Hum.

Rachman Setiawan explained that since a few years ago, there have been many offshore mining areas (offshore) that uses machines (robots) to carry out its business processes. Humans are only tasked with monitoring remotely (remote) and only comes when a problem occurs on site offshore. There are also many oil companies in the world that only employ a minimal number of people but handle a very wide area of the company. Unfortunately, on the other hand, there are still traditional mining in Indonesia that employs humans physically to mine oil. This fact did not even meet the criteria in the era of the industrial revolution 1.0 (1782) which was marked by mechanization using a steam engine.

Wawan Erfianto in his presentation said that the era of the industrial revolution 4.0 has disruption effect big but with capitalization effect small, different from the previous industrial revolution era. This has the potential to disrupt the labor market, among others due to the lack of certainty in wages, working hours, and social security, unfair competition, insecurity of occupational safety and health, and lack of access to workers' representatives.

Meanwhile, Retna Pratiwi explained that along with the emergence of the Industrial 4.0 era, universities must prepare themselves so that they can produce graduates who have a "warrior spirit". This spirit of struggle is needed because future industrial conditions have the potential to always change, unlike in the past, which only worked as usual. Many new jobs have appeared, but there are also old ones that have been lost. The new job requires new skills, which are different from the skills required in the old job.
